Coral Reefs and Temperature Coral reefs are built by tiny animals called polyps, which live in partnership with microscopic algae. The algae photosynthesize inside the coral's tissue, supplying most of the coral's food and giving the reef its colour. This relationship is highly sensitive to temperature. When seawater becomes too warm for too long, the coral expels the algae in a process called bleaching, turning white and losing its main food source. A brief warming event may be survivable, but prolonged or repeated bleaching often kills the coral. Because reefs support roughly a quarter of all marine species, their decline threatens far more than the corals themselves.
